Title How to be a valuable mentor

A mentor is a seasoned professional who informally guides a less experienced person in their professional endeavors. A mentor should always have the mentee's best interests in mind and tailor their mentorship style to meet that person's needs.

In this 1-hour fireside discussion, NAHN Education Committee members will go over best practices of being a mentor, and provide tips on how to identify and get the most out of a mentor. This session will focus on answering questions from members working to identify a mentor and experienced medical professionals wanting to mentor younger colleagues in their general career.

CVEEP webinar on November 20, 2023 cover page

NAHN and the Covid-19 Vaccine Education and Equity Project for the second webinar in a series on Oral Anti-Virals. This second webinar features speaker Dr. Fabian Sandoval, who is a CEO and Research Director, with over 25 years of bench to bedside research experience.
Background:
As we enter the cold and flu season, there is a lot of talk about the updated Flu and COVID-19 vaccines. However, if a patient gets COVID-19 or the patient is not able to get vaccinated, what other forms of treatment are they offered? Oral antivirals continue to create confusion among the population in regard to eligibility and treatment in spite of last year's FDA and CDC approval.
Facts:

Last year, after conducting a study with more than 700,000 patients, the CDC reported that Black patients were 36% less likely to be prescribed an oral antiviral than white patients, while Hispanics were 30% less likely to get the drug.
Call to Action:
What are antivirals? When are they recommended for treatment? Do they produce side-effects? Who is eligible to take them? Can I purchase them in advance?

webinar

NAHN and NACNS invite you to explore the field of the clinical nurse specialist and all the opportunities within the role.

Interested in significantly impacting the nation’s economy by providing safe, low-cost, and effective evidence-based health care services? Take your nursing career to the next level and become a clinical nurse specialist.

Clinical nurse specialists (CNS) are leaders in healthcare. Like other advanced practice registered nurses, they are trained in advanced physiology, pharmacology, and physical assessment in addition to their particular areas of specialty. They can diagnose, treat, prescribe, and bill like other APRNs as their state regulations allow.

Learn how to get started as a CNS by watching this 60-minute webinar with NAHN leadership & the National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists (NACNS) President, Mitzi Saunders. This webinar discusses:
- The CNS role and the many ways it is operationalized at the APRN level
- CNS education and how it prepares graduates
- The differences in RN and APRN practice
- Why a CNS program is the best choice for most nurses seeking graduate-level education
- How to identify CNS programs and the next steps to apply

Moderators:
Mayra Garcia, DNP, APRN, PCNS-BC
Crystal Loucel, RN, PHN, CDCES, HWNC-BC, AHN-BC, MPH, MS

Speaker:
Mitzi M. Saunders, PhD, APRN, ACNS-BC, President, National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists (NACNS)

Dr. Saunders became a Certified Adult Health Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) in 1994, practicing at a level 1 trauma center. She accepted an academic leadership position at the University of Detroit Mercy in 2000, and completed her PhD in Nursing in 2006 from Wayne State University. In her research, she focuses on improving health outcomes in family caregivers of patients with heart failure or dementia, improving the delivery of online health education, and increasing the visibility of the CNS role to achieve full scope of practice for all CNSs. Dr. Saunders, a tenured Professor, actively leads in efforts that support advanced practice nursing at the local, state, and national levels.
